The Proteus Effect 0.9.8 Public Release



Greetings! Version 10.0 is now live for supporters, so it's time to publicly release 0.9.8! In this release, a new district opens in Ogremarsh, and an old friend(?) unexpectedly arrives. Alex and the others also try to get help for their fight against the dragon by visiting a sleepy little town, but there's something strange happening there... You'll also meet the mystery fisherman who left his hat in the Dark Pits, who leads you to discover something ancient and powerful - but can you defeat its guardian?

  • New party member
  • 2 new H-scenes
  • 7-ish quests, depending on how you count
  • 1 (small) dungeon
  • 2 boss fights
  • 1 minigame

  • Added lighting effects
  • Added game character view feature (press ‘i’ to toggle. Warning: this feature is a little wonky!)
  • Added menu character view feature (on the Status menu)
  • Xmog feature (he’s on the 2nd floor of the Sorcerer’s Society)
  • Battle action sequences
  • New animations
  • New ability for Ana
  • New equipment slots
  • Default items for new slots (old saves should be fixed automatically)
  • New boots for completing Celie’s quest (chickens vs. frogs, awarded retroactively)
  • Changed the way TP behaves for many characters
  • Removed lots of exclamation points!!
  • Got rid of level indicators
  • Improved conveyance for cookie quest (there should be fewer ‘WTF am I supposed to do?’ moments.)
  • Several new skits
  • An autosave feature
  • A vast number of fixed bugs
  • Improved game performance (hopefully)
  • Approximate new content playtime: 5-7 hours

I've played the newest version several times, but it consistently freezes at the club scene. It doesn't seem to be the dialogue, because it slows down after entering the door. It could be the lighting. It usually doesn't seem to full freeze until somewhere around the time the succubus shows up. There doesn't seem to be a way around this, and resetting the game doesn't fix it. I don't think it's an issue with my PC since it handles much more graphic intensive games without this. I could be wrong though. I do want to add that this would be a great game if you ever added controller support, or the ability to play it in a console emulator, (i.e. Saturn or Playstation etc.).
